Notes from the house

Short essays on cloth, craft and the long life of clothes.

Atelier

The slow art of the bias cut

Cut a silk at forty-five degrees and it stops behaving like a cloth and starts behaving like a liquid. It stretches, it hangs, it moves with the body — and it will not forgive a mistake. Our Amparo slip is cut from a single panel and hung for three days before the hem is marked.

Heritage

A season in Oaxaca

The Filigrana cuff begins as a pencil drawing, then wire, then fire. The workshop’s oldest artisan has made the same twist of gold for forty years and still says the hundredth is the first one she gets right.

Style

Dressing the long evening

Choose one extravagant thing and let everything else be quiet. A column gown needs no jewellery; a great clutch needs no explanation; a good coat should be the last thing you put on and the first thing people remember.
